Penang War Musuem
The war museum is located at the southern tip of Penang Island, inside an old military fort on Bukit Hantu: a name that means ‘Ghost Hill,’ in Malay. Good place to go back in time and relive the footprints of war. The museum is very well kept and preserved. Do wear comfortable shoes to explore as there are actual buildings, escape routes and tunnels for you to crawl and climb on. On entering the tunnel, the temperature dropped immediately – it was cool inside. Please be careful as there were some left over unremoved booby traps.

Penang Aquarium Batu Maung (Malaysia)
During last week school holiday, we went to Batu Maung Aquarium , the aquarium real name Tunku Abdul Rahman Aquarium is a marine and freshwater exhibition centre. It is a mini aquarium.
This place is not very big but the layout is beautiful with neat and attractive interior design. The exhibition space is quite comfortable even though there were kindergarten and school groups present on the day I visited.
The location of Batu Maung Aquarium is not far from Penang's Second Bridge. Through Tun Dr. Lim Chong Eu Highway, exit to Jalan Batu Maung. The aquarium is located on the right opposite the Batu Maung Post Office.

Gold Sweats at Pantai Esen!
❤️A quiet secluded beach with not much people. You have to walk about 300m from the outer are to reach
the beach unless you're using motorcycles.
❤️Therefore, it naturally has a cleaner environment as a perk. There's also an air bnb and an ATV training center around the area.
❤️Nice atmosphere and lovely view. Swimming's isn't allowed,as the currents and waves are strong.
❤️We enjoyed the beautiful and sunny day throughout the hiking. Remember, please bring along all rubbish generated along with you to sustain this beautiful place ❤️Overall, I have really enjoyed the visit this beach!

Penang War Museum
#penangspots Penang War Museum in Batu Maung is a hauntingly immersive site that offers a sobering glimpse into Malaysia’s wartime past. Originally built as a British fort in the early twentieth century, the complex was later occupied by Japanese forces during World War II and used as a prisoner-of-war camp. Today, the museum sprawls across a forested hilltop, with original bunkers, tunnels, and barracks left largely untouched, allowing visitors to walk through history in its rawest form. Informative displays and weathered artifacts tell stories of both military strategy and human suffering, while eerie remnants like bullet-riddled walls and rusting weaponry evoke a chilling sense of realism. Though some areas feel neglected and the occasional ghost-themed attraction may distract from its historical gravity, the museum remains a powerful tribute to resilience and remembrance. For those seeking a deeper understanding of Penang’s wartime legacy, this living museum offers a thought-provoking journey through time.
Bby’s World.
Penang War Museum – Echoes of Conflict on Ghost Hill
Perched atop Batu Maung Hill, the Penang War Museum occupies what was once a sprawling British fortress before the Japanese invasion in WWII . Today, its network of pillboxes, anti-aircraft pits, underground tunnels, and barracks remains largely intact—a labyrinth of concrete and nostalgia waiting to be explored.
Walking through the grounds, you’re met with a mix of authentic relics—cannons, ammunition storage chambers nine meters underground, a command centre—and atmospheric installations like replica skulls and haunting murals . While some exhibits tread into sensationalism, the rawness of bullet-pocked walls, guillotine remnants, and POW chambers delivers a visceral and unsettling glimpse into wartime cruelty ().
The experience becomes interactive as you crawl through tunnels that once connected to the sea, climb observation towers, and feel the weight of history in dim underground chambers (). It’s a blend of educational insight and dark tourism—so bring sturdy shoes, insect repellent, and a curious mind .
Why it stays with you:
• It’s Southeast Asia’s largest war museum, set in real military architecture spanning 20 acres .
• The contrast between strategic hilltop views and shadowy interiors reminds you how precarious historical defenses often were .
• The uneasy reputation as “Bukit Hantu” (Ghost Hill)—complete with Night Tours and haunted lore—lends an uncanny layer of atmosphere that powerfully evokes memory and mortality .
Whether you’re a history buff, nostalgia seeker, or thrill enthusiast, a visit here feels vivid, challenging, and evocative—a journey through concrete silence into Malaysia’s wartime soul.

Penang Mini Campsite
#myhiddengems
A nice peaceful campsite away from hustle bustle of the city. Have basic necessities available- toilet, shower, basin, electricity and a nice view of the 2nd Penang bridge. Can spend time relaxing doing nothing or go fishing or explore along the sea side. Price is reasonable.
Simple and safe camping site. My first time there give me memorable moments. Plan to bring along my working colleagues one of this day.

Penang War Museum

This place is definitely worth the visit but just a heads up. This place is quite a creepy because it is once colonized by the Imperialist and the atrocities committed at this very location. It is rated one of the most haunted places in South East Asia so for those looking for some extra thrill they have night tour as well. One more thing, bring along your mosquito repellent.

Experience World War II | War Museum
#tripxplorproject
I visited the Penang War Museum, Southeast Asia's largest, perched atop Batu Maung Hill. Originally a British military fortress in the 1930s, it fell to Japanese forces in 1942, becoming a site of horror and imprisonment. Abandoned for decades, founder Johari Shafie restored it, preserving its history. Today, the museum offers a vivid portrayal of wartime life, with well-preserved structures and exhibits. Visitors, like Nasrullah, are moved by the museum's immersive experience, reflecting on the wartime atrocities depicted. Recognized by National Geographic and the International WWII Museum Association, it stands as a poignant reminder of the past and the importance of peace.

PENANG ISLAND WAR MUSEUM
A private museum complex, built by the British as a hill fort in the 1930's used by the Japanese as a POW camp and killing place.
Average to very good is quite a large jump! This attraction is better than average but probably not quite very good…I would rate it good. However, it’s certainly worth visiting and shows the dark days in World War 2 when it became a prisoner of war camp controlled by the Japanese invaders of Penang Island. Some areas did seem rather neglected but overall, it was informative.
There are many steps so anyone with mobility problems would experience difficulty in seeing the whole area. The other big problem was the mosquitos so if visiting, make sure you take mosquito repellent with you.
It’s not the cheapest attraction in Penang…it cost 76MYR for 2persons. If you go by car, you have to pay extra. If you’ve no car, the bast way is by taxi.
There are many interesting artifacts on display along with some quite gruesome areas…the gallows and execution, by beheading area…maybe not for the faint hearted!
It doesn’t take all that long to wander around…probably about an hour and a half allowing for photo opportunities etc.
Worth visiting but don’t forget the mosquito repellents!
