Guanyin Temple, also made famous by Black Myth: Wukong. It's renowned for the Guanyin Hall, the main hall in the courtyard. Although the hall is less than 30 sq m, it houses over 500 suspended sculptures. Three walls and the roof beams are covered with gilded, painted, and suspended sculptures. Here, you'll find not only Buddhist figures like the three great Bodhisattvas including Guanyin, the Eighteen Arhats, and the Twenty-Four Devas, but also Taoist figures such as the Jade Emperor, the Queen Mother of the West, and the Eight Immortals. Look over there, statues of Confucius and his disciples are hidden in a corner, representing Confucian elements. Unlike the purely Buddhist culture found at Xiaoxitian Temple, the sculptures here blend Confucian, Buddhist, and Taoist cultures. Among the sculptures, you'll also find figures like market vendors, farmers, weavers, and opera characters interspersed throughout. Look, there's a performance on the stage; Sun Wukong hiding in a crevice, and depictions of historical events like the Tumu Crisis. Changzhi's Guanyin Hall, another masterpiece of Ming Dynasty suspended clay sculpture art in Shanxi, may be much smaller than Xiao Xitian's 216 square meters—with less than 40 square meters of interior space—but I found its richness of content and craftsmanship sometimes even more impressive. It's definitely worth visiting, and you don't even need to climb a mountain, which brought tears of joy to my eyes 😃 The hall houses approximately 500 sculptures, with the largest measuring about 2 meters and the smallest just 2 centimeters. The content harmoniously blends Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. Due to the compact space, the visual effect is more intricate and dense, creating an overwhelming sense of wonder as you identify each figure using reference materials. While Xiao Xitian presents the vast Buddhist universe, Guanyin Hall focuses on the bodhisattva Guanyin, with three striking colorful bodhisattva statues as centerpieces. It features lifelike representations of the Twenty-Four Devas and Eighteen Arhats, along with Buddhist stories including Sudhana's fifty-three spiritual encounters, Tang Emperor's journey to retrieve Buddhist scriptures, Guanyin's thirty-three manifestations, and Guanyin saving people from eight disasters. For Taoist content, beyond the Jade Emperor, Queen Mother of the West, Three Officials, and Supreme Emperor of Dark Heaven, there are also the Twenty-Eight Constellations and Taoist celestial musicians. Looking closely at these small immortals playing instruments, they seem truly immersed in a heavenly concert only they can hear. Nearby, the Eight Immortals appear to have arrived after hearing the music, excitedly preparing to join the Queen Mother's birthday banquet. For Confucian elements, Confucius is positioned at the center of the hall's ceiling, alongside Buddha and Laozi, symbolizing the harmonious coexistence of the three teachings.
