Meteora - UNESCO World Heritage Site in Greece that houses stunning multiple Eastern Orthodox Monasteries. We drove 4 hours from Athens to visit the site. This was during the Chritmas /New Year period thus there's also many local Greeks that visiting the area in the same time. There are currently 6 monastries still in operation and we visited 2 of them Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron and Holy Monastery of Varlaam. As a foreigner, we paid 3 euro per entry and I believed it is free for Greek. The landscape around the area was stunning and there are multiple photo spots along the route which you can take beautiful photos from. For whoever that wants to visit - recommend to be there earlier in the morning as from 1200 onwards, there are many locals which would cramp the small road and is hard to drive due to limited carpark spaces and everyone park on the side of the road. There are many hiking trails that are well-marked and accessible which is a good way to explore the area. Entrance fee for one monastery is 5€/pax. As the monasteries are religious sites, long skirts are required and shoulders must be covered for women. But some monasteries may offer wrap around skirts for women at the entrance. I went to Megalo Meteoron Monastery, the most famous of the monasteries in Meteora. It takes about 1.5 hours to walk from the center of Kalambaka town. You enter the monastery by climbing the steep slope of the monastery cliff. Compared to other monasteries, the condition of the paintings inside and the building are beautiful and large. There is also a viewpoint inside the monastery, and the view from there is beautiful. If you have to go to just one monastery in Meteora, this is the one to go to. The entrance fee is 3 euros. I went to Varlaam Monastery. It's about an hour and a half walk from the center of Kalambaka town. This is one of the most famous monasteries among the seven monasteries, so I recommend you to visit it. It's one of the highlights of Meteora sightseeing. We went trekking to Meteora from the town of Kalambaka. There are seven monasteries in Meteora, and the trekking through them takes about 6 to 8 hours. Each monastery has different days of the week for the old building, so be sure to check the opening dates in advance. You can rent an electric bike for 20 euros a day. There are bus tours starting from about 5,000 yen, but I would definitely recommend walking.
