🏮A trip to Gold Coast Chinatown: Finding familiar tastes in a foreign country
#5月好去处2025
In addition to beaches, surfing, sightseeing and shopping, the Gold Coast actually hides a unique little world - Gold Coast Chinatown, located in the Southport area, which is a microcosm of the multiculturalism here. Although it is not as large as the Chinatowns in Sydney and Melbourne, it has a delicate, small and beautiful feeling, and it is worth taking the time to walk around.
🏮 Atmosphere: A small cultural district that blends Chinese and Western cultures
The entire Chinatown street is not long, and it can be visited in about 10 minutes, but the red lanterns, Chinese signs, and traditional architectural decorations on both sides of the street still create a strong Chinese style. Walking on the road, you can see decorations such as "Fu", "Shou", and "Dragon", which instantly make people feel familiar.
From time to time, you can see some street sculptures and cultural knowledge written on the floor tiles with poems or Chinese and English comparisons, which makes people appreciate while walking, and also feel the respect and integration of Asian culture in the Gold Coast.
🍜 Food: Authentic taste, diverse choices
The biggest highlight here is, of course, the Chinese restaurant and Asian cuisine! There are also many Cantonese, Sichuan, Hong Kong-style dim sum, Vietnamese rice noodles, Korean barbecue and other choices around. There is a menu for reference at the door of each store, and most of the staff can speak Chinese, so communication is no problem at all.
After the meal, I also bought some snacks and instant noodles at a nearby Asian supermarket. Although the price is slightly higher than that of local supermarkets in Australia, I am still very satisfied to be able to buy the taste of home here.
🧧 Activities and festivals (if the time coincides)
According to locals, if you come here during the Lunar New Year, Lantern Festival or Mid-Autumn Festival, Chinatown will also hold cultural festivals, dragon and lion dance performances, market stalls and other activities, which will be much more lively than usual. It's a pity that I didn't come during the festival, but the cultural atmosphere on weekdays alone is enough to make people feel the charm of this place.
