I hadn't even heard of the Qinghai Tibetan Culture Museum before I planned my trip to Xining (embarrassingly ignorant, I know). At the time, I knew almost nothing about Tibetan culture, only that there was a massive 618-meter Thangka painting here. When I finally entered the museum, I regretted not allocating more time… I ended up being ushered out by the closing announcement. But it was truly amazing! Almost everyone lingered in front of the 618-meter Thangka, marveling and gazing intently. Long story short, this place not only houses the Guinness World Record-holding giant Thangka, created by 400 artists over 4 years, but also detailed exhibits on ethnic clothing and architecture, daily life, history and culture, medicine, Tibetan books… everything you can imagine. It encompasses all aspects of Tibetan culture. 🔺Introduction: Located in Xining, the Qinghai Tibetan Culture Museum is the only national first-class museum dedicated to the comprehensive collection, preservation, exhibition, research, education, and inheritance of Tibetan culture. Xining is the biggest city in Qinghai province. An easy step to get to the famous Qinghai Lake, but the city itself is worth visiting too. Fly in, or take a train like I did from nearby Lanzhou. When you're in Xining, you're at the outer edge of the Tibetan Plateau. You can find a glimpse of Tibetan life all around, but nowhere as clear as at the Tibetan Medicine Museum. It's one of the most interesting museums I've been to in China. Of course you can find all kinds of statues as well as plenty of other historic relics. The star of the show, however, is an amazing tangka painting that's about 600 meters long. You can see it all stretched. Better bring your walking shoes. In the city center there are dozens of big shopping malls. You'll easily find a place to eat here. But I suggest going a little outside of the city center towards Wanda Plaza and Sofitel. Around there are plenty of nice little restaurants and bars, such as an Indian restaurant. #culturalattraction

The monastery in Xining is swarming with worshipping monks, amongst beautiful temples, full of colour and life! The surrounding town is quiet and peaceful, and the entry into the monastery is quick and easy. You can spend hours wondering around this beautiful site, it really feels like you're in another country. I would always highly recommend visiting this amazing place, to see a direct contrast between Chinese ans Tibetan inspired architecture. Arrive early to ensure a quiet experience.
