Wat Muang

Wat Muang in Ang Thong is an ancient temple that has been part of Ang Thong province for a long time. In 2008, the construction of Luang Pho Yai (Phra Buddha Mahanawamin Sakyamuni Sri Wiset Chai Chan), the largest Buddha statue in Thailand, was completed. This has made the temple a popular destination for tourists who come to admire its beauty and pay their respects. Originally, Wat Muang in Ang Thong was an abandoned temple built during the late Ayutthaya period. In the past, it was a prosperous frontier town rich in various resources. However, during the war when Ayutthaya fell to Myanmar, the area was left in ruins and the temple became abandoned. In 1983, Phra Khru Wibul Acharakun or Luang Pho Kasem of Wat Muang, Ang Thong, began the restoration of the temple. It became a temple with resident monks and a spiritual center for the local Buddhist community.
