It's a long story, but it's pure history. When the name Khlong Lod is mentioned, everyone might think of a small canal around Rattanakosin Island that is stinky and full of garbage. At night, some might think that this place is a gathering place for young men and women who come to seek sexual services. But now Khlong Lod has changed. Let's learn the history of Khlong Lod first. I can tell you that it's pure history. Khlong Lod is a canal dug by King Rama I in 1783 when the capital was moved from Thonburi to the Phra Nakhon side, connecting the original Khlong Ku Muang to the Khlong Rop Krung. There are 2 canals, which are called "Khlong Lod" according to their characteristics. Khlong Lod Wat Ratchanatda starts from the original Khlong Ku Muang between the Rattanakosin Hotel and Wat Buranasirimatayaram, passing through Tanao Road, Wat Mahannoparam, Dinso Road, Bangkok City Hall, Wat Ratchanatdaram, and Mahachai Road, and ends at Khlong Rop Krung at Wat Ratchanatdaram. This canal was originally called "Khlong Lod" and has no specific name. But later, it was called according to the point where it passed, such as "Khlong Buranasiri", "Khlong Wat Mahannop", "Khlong Wat Ratchanatda" and "Khlong Wat Thepthida". Khlong Lod Wat Ratchabophit starts from Khlong Khu Mueang Derm at Wat Ratchabophit, passing Ratchabophit Road, Dinso Road, Mahachai Road, and meets Khlong Rop Krung, north of Damrong Sathit Bridge. This canal has another name, "Khlong Saphan Than", but officially it is "Khlong Wat Ratchabophit". Khlong Lod is a canal for diverting water between Khlong Khu Mueang Derm (Eastern side of Thonburi moat) and Khlong Rop Krung that was newly dug. The upper canal was dug from beside Wat Buranasiri (when the Chao Phraya Suthammathirat Canal was dug, Wat Buranasiri had not yet been built. After digging the canal, a temple was built near the canal). This Khlong Lod goes straight to beside Wat Thepthida (when digging, Wat Thepthida had not yet been built either. Only when Wat Thepthida and Wat Ratchanatda were built in the reign of King Rama III did this canal emerge, so it was between Wat Thepthida and Wat Ratchanatda some). Then it exits Khlong Rop Krung. The lowest part of Khlong Lod from the side of Wat Ratchabophit (when it was dug, Wat Ratchabophit was not built yet. Wat Ratchabophit was just built in the reign of King Rama V. When the canal was dug, it was still the houses of nobles and there might have been some empty areas, gardens, and forests.) It was dug straight to Khlong Rop Krung, next to Suan Rommaniyanat today. Because there was a charcoal trading port, the bridge across the canal in that area was called Saphan Than. Later, it became a community of women, who at that time were called prostitutes, and were well-known among men at that time.) Both Khlong Lod canals were wide canals from the time they were first dug until the reign of King Rama V. Therefore, they were used as canals for travel, apart from water pumping. In 1982, the cabinet resolved to name these two canals "Khlong Lod Wat Ratchanatdaram" and "Khlong Lod Wat Ratchabophit". Let's get to know them briefly. Currently, there are many Thai and foreign tourists who like to walk and take pictures of various places on both sides of Khlong Lod, such as the Ratnakosin Hotel, the Supreme Court building, and the Ministry of Defense. Ministry of Interior, Wat Ratchabophit, Moo Monument, Lord of the Drum Tower, Land Department Building, Pak Khlong Talat, or old buildings on both sides. There are also cute cafes. In the past, Khlong Lod had many bridges crossing the canal at various points. But now, only the bridges in important areas remain. And every bridge has unique architecture, beautiful, valuable, and has a long history alongside Rattanakosin for you to study.
