The Bijagós Archipelago Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site

On July 13, 2025, UNESCO added the Bijagós Archipelago off the coast of West Africa to its World Heritage List. This archipelago earned this distinction for its exceptional biodiversity and rich local traditions. Comprising 88 islands and islets, it is home to endangered green and leatherback sea turtles, manatees, dolphins, and over 870,000 migratory birds. Additionally, the region boasts numerous sacred sites and artisanal fisheries.
