Yuantong Temple

Yuantong Temple is the largest and oldest temple in Kunming. It was built during the Tang Dynasty and is over 1,200 years old. This temple is the center of three sects of Buddhism, a combination of Thai, Burmese, and Chinese (Tibetan) temples. The Golden Pavilion is located in the wealthy part of Kunming, while Yuantong Temple is also located in the power part of the city. The temple’s name comes from the name of Guanyin. Most Chinese temples are built on the mountain, but Yuantong Temple is built lower because it was originally the site of the Guanyin Temple. It was built during the Tang Dynasty but was destroyed during the Ming Dynasty and renovated by Wu Sangui of the Qing Dynasty when he ruled Kunming. You can see that the art and decorations are similar to those of the current Qing Dynasty. Inside the temple, there is an octagonal pavilion in the middle of the Emerald Pool.
