Ciqikou: A Porcelain Port, A Historical Heritage of Chongqing

#discoverchina Ciqikou, also known as Porcelain Village, is a historic ancient town located in the Shapingba District of Chongqing, China. It is situated on the bank of the Jialing River and is approximately 3 kilometers away from the main urban area of Chongqing. The town has a history of over 1,000 years and is renowned for its well-preserved Ming and Qing dynasty architecture. The name "Ciqikou" translates to "Porcelain Village," reflecting its historical significance as a major trading hub for porcelain during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Ciqikou was originally known as Longyin Town. It is said that Zhu Yunwen, the grandson of the Ming Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang, lived in seclusion here after being usurped by his fourth uncle, Zhu Di. The town was renamed "Longyin Town" in his honor. In 1918, the local gentry established the "Shu Porcelain Factory" here, which adopted new technology to produce high-quality porcelain. The products were exported both within and outside the province, gradually replacing the name "Longyin Town". Ciqikou is characterized by its unique landform of "one river, two streams, three mountains, and four streets." The town features narrow cobblestone streets lined with old houses, teahouses, and local eateries. The architecture is predominantly in the Ming and Qing styles, with typical East Sichuan mountain dwellings such as Zhongjiayuan and Tongjiayuan. The Baolun Temple, with a history of 1,000 years, is a significant cultural and spiritual site in the town. Visitors to Ciqikou can enjoy a variety of activities, including strolling along the ancient streets, tasting local delicacies, and visiting traditional teahouses. The town is also known for its vibrant atmosphere, especially during weekends when street performers and vendors set up shop along the main street. The Baolun Temple, dedicated to the Buddhist goddess of mercy, Guanyin, is a peaceful retreat amidst the bustling streets. Ciqikou offers a wide range of local delicacies and snacks, such as Maoxuewang, Qianzhangpi, and pepper and salt peanuts. The town is also famous for its "Chen Mahua," a type of traditional Chinese pastry. Visitors can browse through various souvenir shops to purchase beautiful ceramics and other traditional crafts. Ciqikou is a must-visit destination for those interested in Chinese history and culture. Its well-preserved ancient architecture, vibrant atmosphere, and rich cultural heritage make it a unique and memorable experience for tourists. Whether you are exploring the ancient streets, enjoying local cuisine, or visiting historical sites, Ciqikou offers a glimpse into the peaceful laid-back life of the Sichuan countryside.
