Design, Discovery, and a Dash of Dundee Charm

Often overlooked but full of surprises, Dundee turned out to be one of the most refreshing day trips I’ve had in Scotland. The city sits quietly on the banks of the River Tay, but its spirit is anything but quiet. I started my day at the V&A Dundee — Scotland’s first design museum. The building itself is a work of art, like a futuristic ship rising from the waterfront. Inside, I explored exhibits on Scottish innovation, fashion, and even video games (Dundee is the birthplace of Grand Theft Auto, after all!). Just next door is the legendary RRS Discovery, the ship that carried Scott and Shackleton to Antarctica. Walking its wooden decks while imagining life on polar expeditions was both thrilling and humbling. The museum beside it brings the adventure to life with interactive displays and dramatic storytelling. For lunch, I headed into the West End, where I found a cozy café serving haggis paninis (yes, you read that right — surprisingly tasty!) and oat milk lattes. The vibe in Dundee is effortlessly creative — a mix of students, artists, and friendly locals. In the afternoon, I wandered up to The Law, a dormant volcano offering panoramic views of the city, the Tay Rail Bridge, and the hills beyond. The wind was strong, but the view made the climb more than worth it. Dundee might not be as famous as Edinburgh or Glasgow, but it’s got heart, history, and a bold future.
