🄢 Shun Fa Ba Kut Teh (Gelang Patah) – Overpriced, Underwhelming, and MSG-Heavy

Dropped by Shun Fa Ba Kut Teh in Gelang Patah with high hopes for a solid bak kut teh meal, but it ended up being one of the more disappointing food stops on my trip. I went for their so-called ā€œpremiumā€ spare ribs—priced above the usual—but what arrived at the table was anything but premium. The meat was noticeably tough and dry, with none of that fall-off-the-bone tenderness you’d expect from well-braised pork. The broth had mild herbal notes, but they were quickly overshadowed by a lingering sharpness that screamed MSG. That artificial aftertaste stuck around long after the meal—and so did the thirst. To top things off, the restaurant had a stale, musty smell when we walked in (perhaps due to poor ventilation or unclean tables during the off-peak hour). It made the entire dining experience feel unappetizing from the get-go. Considering the premium pricing, I expected better execution across the board. Johor has no shortage of solid bak kut teh joints—but this isn’t one I’d recommend. Save your money and appetite for other spots that deliver stronger flavor, better hygiene, and actual value. #summervacay #shunfabakutteh #gelangpataheats #bakkuttehreview #foodletdown #johorfoodie #msgoverload #betterbktelsewhere
