This was hands down the highlight of our Penang trip—I was genuinely excited for this meal, and it absolutely delivered. Dining at Auntie Gaik Lean’s Old School Eatery felt like being invited into someone’s home, where every dish was served with heart and heritage. Instead of picking dishes ourselves, we entrusted Adrian (Auntie Gaik Lean’s son) to curate the meal for us. And honestly, who are we to argue with the expert? That decision paid off beautifully. We started with lor bak and pie tee—both were crispy, flavourful, and a perfect warm-up to the main spread. The nasi ulam was an aromatic, herby delight, while the sambal brinjal and sambal petai with prawns packed just the right punch. The curry chicken was rich and comforting, and the assam stingray—oh wow—bursting with tangy-spicy goodness. To wrap up the meal, we had bee koe moy and pengat for dessert. The black glutinous rice was silky and deeply satisfying, while the pengat was thick, sweet, and comforting—just like how grandma might make it. The ambience is charming and unpretentious, perfectly complementing the soulful food. Every dish was executed with such precision, and you could tell there was deep respect for tradition.
