Atop the roof, I spotted vivid ceramic figurines—miniature pagodas, flowers, and mythical creatures—all part of a traditional craft known as “chien nien” or cut porcelain work. The lively green dragon sculpture poised on the roof ridge seemed almost ready to leap into the sky, symbolizing power and protection. Below, a detailed relief panel caught my eye; it depicted an ancient Chinese scene with scholars and courtyards, framed by colorful floral motifs and gold-painted carp swimming beneath. These decorations are more than art—they’re storytellers. Each figure and flourish carries cultural meaning, reflecting the hopes, values, and artistry of Penang’s Chinese community. To stand beneath them is to feel the presence of history, where craftsmanship and symbolism come alive in dazzling color and detail.
