The first fort was built by the Kamakura Shogunate's steward Nikaido Gyosei during the Kennin era (1201-1204). Rising up a rocky mountain, Gifu Castle was known as an impregnable castle. You can enter Gifu Castle, but the view from the Tenshukaku is also wonderful, with the Nagara River below and the Nobi Plain in the distance, making for a truly spectacular view! On the other hand, if you look at Gifu Castle from the top of Mt. Kinka along the Nagara River, it looks small.
