Most bizarre-shaped observatory tower in Sichuan

#sichuanattractions During a trip to Guangyuan in Sichuan, I spotted a tower of bizarre shape while riding a taxi. From there I looked up the google maps and learnt that it’s called the Phoenix Tower. Perched atop Phoenix Mountain as a striking local landmark, this 42-meter-tall, 13-story tower was constructed in 1989 to resemble a phoenix—a nod to the legendary bird associated with Empress Wu Zetian, China's only female emperor, who was born in this region. The tower's architecture, featuring golden glazed tiles and gracefully curved eaves, symbolizes the phoenix's elegance and the empress's enduring connection to her hometown. Inside, each floor offers observation decks that provide sweeping vistas of Guangyuan's urban landscape, the meandering Jialing and Nan Rivers, and the surrounding mountains. Visitors can also explore cultural exhibits, including a library dedicated to women's literature and art, reflecting the city's rich female heritage. Located within Phoenix Mountain Park—a free public space adorned with gardens, pavilions, and recreational facilities—Phoenix Tower invites travelers to immerse themselves in Guangyuan's unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.
