Nestled at the base of Jaeyaksan Mountain, this place has been around since 654 AD, founded by the legendary monk Wonhyo. It’s been rebuilt a few times, especially after getting torched during the Imjin War, but it’s still standing strong with a vibe that’s both ancient and alive. The temple grounds are gorgeous, think lush pine forests, stone pathways, and a cool mix of Buddhist and Confucian architecture. You’ll see the three-story stone pagoda (a real Korean treasure), a bronze incense burner from way back in 1177, and murals that tell stories of monks who fought for Korea’s freedom. It’s also home to the only Confucian academy inside a Buddhist temple, which is pretty unique. If you’re into nature, the nearby waterfalls and valleys add some extra magic. For a deeper experience, you can even do a temple stay, meditate, learn, and just unplug for a bit. Pro tip: wear comfy shoes because there are stairs, and bring water if you’re hiking around.
