The church was built in the 19th century during the early French occupation of Vietnam. The church was modeled after Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris and is the largest center of Roman Catholics in Hanoi. It is considered a model of Hanoi's outstanding colonial architecture. The church is also famous among tourists visiting Vietnam.
