Haugesund is a town on the North Sea coast in Rogaland, Norway. However, it is the main commercial and economic center for Kamoi City in the north of Logaran County and the Haugland region in the south of Westerland County. Most of Haugesund's population lives in the southwestern part of the city; most of the area outside the city is rural or undeveloped. Although Haugesund has a short history, the area around Haugesund was a center of power during the Viking Age. The hometown of Norway's first king Harald Kinfy is in Avalsnes, only about 8 kilometers south of Haugesund, and is also known as the hometown of the Viking king. He died in 932 AD and is believed to have been buried in 940 in the cemetery of Haraldsaugen, north of the city of Haugesund, adjacent to the Nardsund Strait.
