【Hong Kong Attractions】Revitalization of a Century-old British Monument. Po Fook Hill Cattle Farm 🐄🏰

The Fa Lin Farm was originally a dairy farm owned by a milk company, named after the old name of Pok Fu Lam, "Pok Fa Lin" (the Cantonese pronunciation of "Fa" is the same as "Fu"). It was built in 1886 by Sir Patrick Manson, a Scottish doctor, and five wealthy shareholders. With a history of more than 130 years, it is a conservation project under the fourth phase of the Development Bureau's Revitalising Historic Buildings Partnership Scheme. After conservation and revitalisation, the Pok Fa Lin Farm officially opened to the public on March 27, 2023. Some of the buildings in the farm have been restored and transformed, while other relics such as grass huts, manure pits, and old milk company dormitories are still preserved on the mountains of Pok Fu Lam! We made a reservation for a self-guided tour at 2:00 pm and arrived at the Pok Fa Lin Farm at 1:42 pm. The museum was closed for lunch, but the outdoor space was still open, so we took a walk and snapped some photos there first! It was smaller than we imagined, and we finished the initial photo-taking and check-in process in less than 15 minutes! There are a total of three cow models inside the Pok Fa Lin Farm, two at the entrance, one is a dairy cow at the entrance, and the other is the "art cow" on the grass. The third dairy cow is located in the open-air theatre! In addition to taking photos and checking in, of course, we also wanted to learn about the history and operation of the old farm! On the grassy area at the entrance, there are some exhibitions about dairy cow breeds, food and feeding, pre-milking procedures, and milk processing. Next to it is a 1952 Massey Ferguson T20 tractor that has been restored. This classic tractor is an indispensable memory of the farm! At 2:00 pm, we returned to the reception area and queued up. The self-guided tour was indeed very self-guided. We just needed to tell the receptionist our reservation number, and then we were free to explore. In fact, we had already explored part of the outdoor area, and now it was time to visit the indoor exhibitions! The indoor exhibitions include two multipurpose rooms, one exhibition room, and a balcony. Inside, there are some old photos, the names of former farm managers, and some old documents on display. There is also a model of an old classic refrigerated truck, with a comparison of old photos! The fireplace is the focus of the indoor architecture. The original fireplace in the main building, including its exhaust pipe, fireplace frame, tiles, grate, and bed, has been preserved and repaired to reflect the original building's use and features! There are also some ceramic artworks related to the Pok Fa Lin Farm on the fireplace! In the exhibition, we saw an English newspaper article about Pok Fu Lam Village, which was familiar to us because we passed by Pok Fu Lam Village on our way here. The newspaper was dated November 17, 2013. It has been almost ten years since then, and reading this newspaper aroused my curiosity to go to Pok Fu Lam Village and take a look! After finishing the indoor exhibition, we went to the balcony, where some tables and chairs were placed. It seems that there will be some workshops here! From the balcony, you can see the location of the open-air theatre, where the third dairy cow is located! You can take photos of the entire blue and white main building and the open-air theatre at the location of the open-air theatre! Pok Fa Lin Farm Address: 141 Pok Fu Lam Road, Pok Fu Lam Opening hours: 10:00 am-12:30 pm/2:00-6:00 pm (closed on Wednesdays) #HongKongAttractions #LocalTourism #PokFuLamAttractions #PokFaLinFarm
