Hong Kong Museum of Art's New Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Exhibition showcases donated collections from Jingguanlou and Chihlelou

The Hong Kong Museum of Art (HKMA) will launch two new exhibitions of Chinese calligraphy and painting (July 14), "A Match of Love and Art: Selected Works of Xie Zhiliu and Chen Peiqiu from the Jingguan Pavilion Collection" and "Celebrating with Elegance: Birthday Greetings to the Owner of Chih Lo Tower", respectively showcasing precious collections donated to the HKMA by local collector Dr. Wong Kwai-kuen and Chih Lo Tower owner Ho Yiu-kwong. The exhibition will run until October 25, and admission is free. The late famous Shanghai School calligraphers and painters Xie Zhiliu (1910-1997) and Chen Peiqiu (1923-2020) were a rare couple of painters in the history of Chinese painting. The famous collector Dr. Wong Kwai-kuen was a close friend of the couple. Dr. Wong generously donated his Jingguan Pavilion collection to the HKMA in 2021, and the works of Xie Zhiliu and Chen Peiqiu are one of the key collections. The museum has selected 99 masterpieces from different periods of the couple and exhibited them in the exhibition "Joint Art - Selected Works of Xie Zhiliu and Chen Peiqiu from the Jingguan Pavilion Collection Hall on the fourth floor of the museum. The exhibition space is divided into "He" and "She" as the sub-theme, allowing the audience to appreciate the evolution and achievements of the couple's painting styles in different periods, understand their active exploration of traditional Chinese painting and innovation, and at the same time reflect the life journey of this pair of artistic lovers who walk side by side and support each other in the art world. The exhibition also recreates the painters' painting desks through multimedia equipment to present the different painting habits of the two. Also on display is the "Four Seasons of Rice Waves", a cross-time and space field-specific installation constructed by new media artists Lin Xinjie, Han Jiajun and the team Dimension Plus using AI technology for the exhibition. The work dynamically presents the changes of the four seasons, allowing the audience to feel the different creative rhythms of the two painters. The late collector Ho Yiu-kwong (1907-2006) established the Chih-lok Pavilion Collection of Chinese calligraphy and painting with the aim of preserving national quintessence and promoting calligraphy and painting art. He has always had close contacts with literati in Hong Kong and has been a strong sponsor of cultural activities. The museum will launch a new exhibition titled "Celebrations: Birthday Greetings to the Owner of Chih Lok House" on the fourth floor of the museum, with the theme of Ho's birthday. The exhibition will feature 31 selected works of calligraphy and painting created by Ho's friends in the cultural and business circles, such as Zhang Daqian, Huang Prajna, Mei Yutian, and Ho Shuhui, to celebrate his 60th birthday in 1966. Visitors can also enjoy poems and essays collected by his children from the literary world to understand the grand occasion of Hong Kong's literati and calligraphy and painting circles in the 1950s and 1960s. Ho Yiu-kwong loves Guangdong Nanyin and invites Nanyin artists to his mansion to sing on his birthday. For this exhibition, the museum invited the local art group Yi Cai Gonggu to create background music and Nanyin music to tell the story of Ho's life. Yi Cai Gonggu will also bring live performances and impromptu performances to the audience during the exhibition to enrich the exhibition experience and continue Ho's spirit of preserving and inheriting culture. Architect and artist Hikoko Ito also tailored the "Happy Birthday Likeboxes" art installation for the exhibition, presenting 366 glowing "birthday mailboxes" in the style of social platform posts. Hikoko Ito used the birthday elements of the exhibits to design the patterns on the mailboxes and printed more than 30 birthday cards, inviting the audience to write impromptu, add congratulatory words and images on the birthday cards, and express their thoughts and blessings to other visitors by forwarding handwritten birthday cards. Hikoko Ito hopes to guide the audience to reflect on the current popular copying and collage, and one-click spread of information, and at the same time give others sincere and warm blessings through handmade birthday cards. #HongKongMuseumofArt #goodplacetodrink #drink #goodplaceforfamily #holidayfamilytravel #localtravel #goodplacesinhongkong #goodplacesonweekdays #goodplacesonweekends #goodplaces #localfamilytravel #familytravel #family #familyactivity #check-inattraction #check-in #hklifestyle #hkdaily #hkiger #hkig #hongkong #hk #instadaily #travelhk #discoverhk #explorehongkong #exploringhongkong #discoverhongkong #awesomehongkong
