Isosama Shrine Hydrangeas and Summer Purification

June marks the 'Nagoshi no Ooharae' (Summer Purification Ceremony)! On the last day of June, which represents the halfway point of the year, this ceremony is held at shrines across Japan. The ritual involves purifying the sins and impurities accumulated over the past six months and praying for good health and safety for the remaining half of the year. A 'Chinowa' (a ring made of grass) is set up for this purpose. This year, Isosama Shrine held its first-ever 'Nagoshi no Ooharae.' A shrine priest or staff member explained how to pass through the Chinowa, and there were instructions written on a signboard as well 🙆♀️. It is said that passing through the Chinowa helps cleanse and remove misfortunes. In addition to the Chinowa ritual, 'Hitogata' (paper dolls) are also available for purchase. These paper dolls, shaped like human figures, can be used as substitutes for oneself. You write your name and age on them, and they are purified on your behalf.
