Explore the Historic Erdene Zuu Monastery in Mongolia!

Located on the outskirts of Karakorum, the Erdene Zuu Monastery, established in 1585, is Mongolia's oldest Buddhist temple. Built using materials from the former Mongol Empire capital of Karakorum, it features three main halls symbolizing Buddha's life and an outer wall adorned with 108 stupas. Although much of the monastery was destroyed during the religious purges of 1939, the outer wall and three temples remain intact. Today, it serves as both a place of worship and a museum. Open from May to September, the summer hours are 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with an entrance fee of approximately 5,000 MNT (around 300 yen). A visit typically takes 1 to 2 hours. Within the grounds, the colorful main halls and the stupa-lined walls offer a vivid glimpse into the history of Mongolian Buddhism. As a highlight of Karakorum tourism, this is a must-visit destination.
