Night Sky Adorned with the Dance of Peacocks: "Kihoku Lantern Festival"

A quintessential summer tradition of Higashi-Kishu and one of the premier fireworks festivals in the Tokai region, the "Kihoku Lantern Festival" takes place in Kihoku Town, Mie Prefecture. This town is located near Owase City, home to the World Heritage Kumano Kodo. The festival's highlights are the marine fireworks and the massive lanterns, often referred to as "Sea Nebuta." Among them, the festival's signature display, the magnificent "Saiun Kujaku Senrin" (Colorful Cloud Peacock Thousand Wheels), is truly breathtaking. The reflection of the fireworks on the water makes the spectacle even more stunning. Additionally, the theme of the giant lanterns changes every year. In 2025, the lanterns will commemorate Kihoku Town's 20th anniversary and the 30th anniversary of its friendship city partnership with Shijonawate City. The lanterns will feature the mascots "Kiho-kun" and "Kussun" from both municipalities. On land, various lanterns crafted by local residents, ranging from small to large, will also be on display. While there are many spots to enjoy the fireworks, the prime viewing areas fill up quickly, so it's best to secure your spot early. Dedicated parking lots are located outside the venue but tend to fill up fast. Even the parking lot at the roadside station 2 km away from the fireworks venue is usually full by 4 PM.
