Katsura Imperial Villa in Kyoto

Katsura Imperial Villa is located along the banks of the Katsura River in the southwestern part of Kyoto City. This villa was constructed over a span of 50 years starting in 1615 by Prince Hachijo Toshihito and his son Prince Toshitada. Prince Toshitada, who had a profound knowledge of classical literature, chose this location inspired by the famous Heian period (794-1185) literary work "The Tale of Genji." Remarkably, the villa has never suffered from fire damage since its completion and still retains its original appearance. At the center of the garden lies a large pond, surrounded by the main residence and four tea houses. The irregular shape of the pond results in winding garden paths that follow its contours. This design prevents visitors from seeing the entire garden at once, allowing them to enjoy ever-changing views as they stroll along the paths. The villa is also renowned for its seasonal flowers, particularly the plum blossoms and cherry blossoms in early spring, as well as the deep red azaleas that bloom starting in late spring.
