Strolling Through the Hidden Gem of Penha Hill: Discovering Macau's Southern European Dream

The most unexpected delight of this Macau trip was escaping the crowds to explore Penha Hill (also known as Barra Hill) on my own! Ascending the quiet wooden steps behind the Maritime Administration building, ferns peeked out from Portuguese-style low walls, and the aroma of coffee wafted through blue and white window frames, transporting me to the old-world charm of the Iberian Peninsula. At the end of the stone steps, the Chapel of Our Lady of Penha stood like a pristine pearl atop the hill, its Baroque spire appearing especially sacred against the blue sky. Pushing open the intricately carved wooden door, the stained glass cast colorful shadows, and the statue of the Virgin Mary gazed downward, as if time had frozen in this serene space. I encountered an elderly man fanning himself, accompanied by the chirping of cicadas, as the mountain breeze swept away all worries. From the observation deck, the Macau-Taipa Bridge stretched like a dragon across the water, while the neon lights of Grand Lisboa and the skyline of Zhuhai's Hengqin intertwined, creating a breathtaking fusion of past and present. A visit during sunset is highly recommended! The golden hues of the setting sun bathe the chapel, while fishing boats dot the distant waters. This tranquil and romantic moment reveals Macau's most enchanting hidden side. For those seeking a different experience of Macau, Penha Hill is absolutely worth savoring!
