The Fortress Towering Over the Old Town of Montalcino, Italy

The old town of Montalcino, renowned for its red wine production, is home to a large medieval fortress located to the south. Interestingly, the first floor of the fortress houses a municipal wine shop. Here, visitors can not only purchase souvenirs but also enjoy a glass of wine. By purchasing a ticket at the wine shop counter, visitors can ascend to the top of the fortress. Montalcino, once a city of the Republic of Siena (Guelphs), was embroiled in constant conflict with the Ghibellines during the medieval period. Eventually, the fortress fell, marking the end of the Republic of Siena's history. The view from the top of the fortress is breathtaking, with the greenery of the Orcia Valley stretching out before you.
