The most important parts of the walls were built on top of the old Arab walls during the reign of Pedro el Ceremonioso, although these walls changed again in the following centuries. The walls were built to protect the entire town, not just the castle. The wall architect, Aparisi Joan, began construction in 1330. Sant Mateu, del Sol in the Castle Arms Courtyard, de Fredes, del Forcall, del Carraixet, la Pólvora, del Rei, Estudis, San Francesc and Celoquia towers are no longer standing.
