It’s less touristy compared to Santorini or Mykonos, making it a favorite for travelers who want a more authentic Greek island experience. ⸻ What I Loved: • Beaches: Naxos boasts some of the best and longest sandy beaches in the Cyclades. Plaka Beach, Agios Prokopios, and Agia Anna are stunning with crystal-clear turquoise waters, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports like windsurfing and kitesurfing. • Chora (Naxos Town): The island’s main town is charming with its narrow cobblestone streets, whitewashed houses, and the Venetian Castle (Kastro) overlooking the harbor. Plenty of traditional tavernas, cafes, and shops give it a lively yet relaxed vibe, especially at sunset. • Villages: Inland villages like Apeiranthos, Halki, and Filoti are worth visiting for their stone-built houses, local crafts, and delicious food. They show a different, quieter side of Naxos away from the coast. • History & Culture: Naxos has a fascinating archaeological heritage. The Portara (the giant marble gate) from an unfinished ancient temple is an iconic landmark visible from the harbor. There are also ancient ruins and Byzantine churches scattered around the island. • Food: The local cuisine is excellent, featuring fresh seafood, cheeses (like the famous Naxian graviera), and local specialties such as “rosto” (slow-cooked pork) and “kitron” (a local citrus liqueur). ⸻ Things to Keep in Mind: • Getting Around: Renting a car or scooter is highly recommended as public transport is limited, and many beaches and villages are spread out. • Tourism Level: While less crowded than Santorini or Mykonos, Naxos can get busy during peak summer months (July and August), so early booking of accommodation is advised. • Nightlife: Nightlife is relatively low-key compared to other Cycladic islands. Expect laid-back bars and small clubs mostly in Chora.
