Geng Jiesheng: Back to Nature What is the difference between a piece of wood and a plant? Artist Geng Jiesheng puts them on the timeline and re-examines them, seeing them as the same substance, but belonging to the two ends of inanimate and animate. Is it possible to disturb the linear timeline and return the substance to its natural state? In the process from wooden board to plant, carving a plant seems to only satisfy the outline of the image. If the material itself is its original body, by plane the wood into thin slices, the body that grows layer by layer is divided in reverse. For the artist, this is like the dismantling of the time sequence of life. The time sequence of forming slices has gained space to move, and the wooden board has been revived into a soft and reshapeable state. But in the face of these piles of unfamiliar plant remains, how can we restore and approach it? In order to obtain the nutrients needed for plants to regenerate, Geng Jiesheng began to think about how the environment shared with plants - sunlight, air, water and earth - affects the human body. In this process of mutual understanding, it feels like I’m reconnected to the ground. I can’t say that I truly understand the truth of nature, but I feel a certain connection of coexistence.
