Manzhouli, a Colorful Gem

Coastal and Border Journey Episode 22: After a long drive from Genhe, the dense forests gradually thinned, giving way to the vast grasslands of Hulunbuir. Compared to the suffocating feeling in the woods, driving across the prairie was pure bliss—especially when gazing down from the hills at Manzhouli, a dazzling, dreamlike castle of colors. Truly breathtaking! Day one was a "special forces-style" tour through Russian-era architecture, museums, and an old prison. Day two offered another "one glance, three countries" experience—this time with Mongolia to the left and Russia to the right. The towering national gate stood majestic, and from the observation deck, I spotted Chinese workers laboring in the distance, Russian soldiers patrolling nearby, and the eye-poppingly vibrant Russian Matryoshka Doll Square. The sights were so captivating, fatigue never set in! Today, on Dragon Boat Festival, I dined at a Russian-style restaurant—surprisingly, the only Chinese customer. A mixed-race waiter fluent in Northeastern Chinese, Russian, and Mongolian explained that not all patrons were Russian; two tables were from Mongolia. The chatter was indecipherable, but the festive vibe was unmistakable! 👍 Traveling along Northeast China’s border, most cities left little impression—until Manzhouli.
