Hidden Gem in Osaka: A Stroll Along the Otsu River

During my trip to Osaka, aside from visiting popular spots like Dotonbori and Umeda, I made a special effort to explore the hidden Otsu River nestled within the city. To my surprise, I discovered a tranquil space filled with greenery and a touch of Kyoto's charm! Located in Osaka's Tennoji district, the Otsu River is a small waterway about 10 meters wide. Its banks are lined with cherry blossoms and maple trees, creating lush greenery in spring and summer, and vibrant autumn foliage later in the year. Dubbed "Osaka's Little Kyoto," the area is perfect for a leisurely evening stroll. Wooden walkways and benches are set up along both sides of the river, where locals can be seen walking their dogs, relaxing, or simply enjoying the serene atmosphere. One of the most unique features of the Otsu River is its traditional "kawadoko" dining culture. During summer, some restaurants set up open-air seating over the river, allowing diners to enjoy dishes like okonomiyaki or grilled eel while taking in the flowing water scenery—a truly romantic experience. Although my visit wasn't during the summer season, I could still sense how this small river seamlessly integrates into the lives of the locals. If you're looking to escape the crowds and immerse yourself in Osaka's rare tranquility and natural beauty, the Otsu River is undoubtedly a hidden treasure.
