Kwan Phayao

Kwan Phayao is located in Mueang Phayao District, Phayao Province. It is a natural water source located in the center of the city. The word Kwan is a local language which means a swamp or a large pond. This word is used in the Lanna dialect only in Phayao Province. Kwan Phayao is a large pond that collects 18 streams. It is the largest freshwater lake in the North and is the most important freshwater fishery in the upper North. There are more than 48 species of freshwater fish. It is a breeding ground for various fish such as catfish, swai, barb, Chinese carp, common carp and tilapia. Kwan Phayao is a large crescent-shaped pond. It is a wide pond as far as the eye can see. It is surrounded by beautiful, intricate mountain ranges. Hundreds of years ago, the area around Kwan Phayao was a community with many temples. Later, when the Fisheries Department built a water gate in Kwan Phayao to store water, the area around Kwan Phayao, which was originally an ancient community and many temples, had to be submerged in Kwan Phayao.
