#culturetrip Wat Yai Suwannaram is a royal temple. The temple was renovated significantly during the reign of King Rama IV. The ordination hall is in the Ayutthaya style with 5-tiered paintings of guardian angels and murals. The highlight is the image of giants and inhuman beings with flesh-colored faces, not the usual mask-like drawings. The principal Buddha image is a stucco Buddha image in the Mara-Vijaya attitude, a cast of the Sangkharat Tangmo. The pediment is a beautiful late Ayutthaya sculpture that looks like it's alive. The covered chapel and sala, Wat Yai Suwannaram, are in the late Ayutthaya architecture. They were built of wood with walls made of plaster and covered with gold lacquer. However, the renovation was wrong, so the entire building was painted red. The roof is a decorated frame with rafters and roofed with tiles. However, due to the incorrect renovation, the entire roof was covered with mortar (ancient mortar). However, the mortar was made of straw, which made it damp and caused lichen to grow on the roof. The original sala belonged to Prince Khwan Tamnak, later Phra Sanphet VIII or King Suea. It was dismantled and presented to the Supreme Patriarch Tangmo, with a beautifully carved door panel that is historically and artistically significant, namely the late Ayutthaya period art. There are marks on the door panel, causing the door to crack and become permanently damaged, called Burmese teeth marks. However, scholars have commented that the door was likely destroyed when the palace was dismantled and presented to Somdet Chao Tangmo (Phra Suwannamuni), the Supreme Patriarch. This is related to the story of the spirit of Chao Fa Phra Khwan, the owner of the original palace, who was executed by King Suea with a sandalwood club when Somdet Phra Phetracha was ill and near death. You can make merit and visit this valuable place every day. #culturetrip
