[Ayutthaya, Thailand] Wat Mahathat: A mysterious attraction in the historic city!

Wat Mahathat (วัดมหาธาตุ), "the temple of the great ruins", is one of the most important temples of the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Located on historic grounds, it has a huge central platform, a very large main hall and many outbuildings as well as a very large and stunning courtyard. It was a royal temple located close to the royal palace. It is believed that this temple was built in the 14th century and important royal ceremonies were performed here. In the middle of the lush lawns is a crumbling complex, some of which look like they will collapse at any time... It features traditional Khmer architecture, Angkor Wat style, headless Buddha statues, pagodas, and the famous Buddha head entangled by tree roots. For many people this is undoubtedly the entry point to the Ayutthaya ruins, there are many tour groups from the beginning, but for many of them the visit seems to be limited to the "tree hugging the Buddha head", so get there early to take pictures of the Buddha head, they made a wooden platform for people to take close-up photos (selfies are almost what everyone does there), so it is one of the most photographed spots in the temple.
