World Heritage Site Val d'Orcia, Italy

The World Heritage Val d'Orcia is located in the Tuscany region of central Italy, stretching from the hills south of Siena to Monte Amiata. Its gently cultivated hills are occasionally ravineed and feature picturesque towns or villages, such as Pienza, rebuilt as an "ideal town" in the 15th century under the patronage of Pope Pius II; Radicofani, home of Gino di Corta, the 13th-century outlaw and favorite hero of the Apennines; and Montalcino, Italy's most prestigious Tuscan wine region, where Brunello di Montalcino, one of Italy's most expensive wines, is produced.
