Encountering a classic Art Deco-style hotel

My first visit to the iconic buildings of Shanghai's Bund left me amazed. Strolling along the streets, taking photos, and marveling at the architecture, I discovered that the Art Deco style we often associate with Shanghai originated here. Without hesitation, I booked a room to fully immerse myself in this perfect journey. The Shanghai New City Hotel, now known as "Jinjiang Metropolo Classiq Shanghai Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street Bund New City Hotel," is located at 180 Jiangxi Middle Road in Huangpu District. Situated at the intersection of the Bund and East Nanjing Road, it is close to Yuyuan Garden and People's Square, offering a prime location within walking distance of many famous attractions. ⸻ History and Architectural Features Originally named "Metropolo Hotel," this establishment was funded by the Sassoon family in 1930 and designed by the British firm Palmer & Turner. The building showcases a quintessential Art Deco style, standing 14 stories tall with a symmetrical and dynamic exterior. It was once referred to as the "Little Peace Hotel." Over the years, the hotel has hosted numerous notable figures, including Mr. Mei Lanfang and American writer Emily Hahn. In 2016, Jinjiang International Group undertook restoration and renovation efforts to preserve its historical charm. The globally renowned HBA design firm reimagined the space, blending modern amenities with the allure of historic architecture.
