Like a paddling note with no likes, Fairmont Singapore

Moving from Swissôtel next door under the same ownership to Fairmont is just a short stroll through the mall corridor—closer than most subway transfers. Both lobbies are equally crowded. While Accor Platinum status works wonders at Swissôtel, at Fairmont it only gets you complimentary breakfast, so I had to go with the flow and wait patiently at the end of the line. The hotel is located in Raffles City, a complex with three towers: the tallest main tower belongs to Swissôtel, while the two slightly shorter ones are Fairmont's. The outdoor pool on the 8th-floor terrace is shared by both. The design logic is puzzling—Fairmont is clearly the more upscale brand with superior decor, yet due to height restrictions and obstructed views, it feels like a lead actor forced to kneel and cater to a financially backed co-star. Fairmont's only clear win is the bathtub in the shower area, which isn't standard in all rooms but an upgrade result. The base room is spacious at 45 sqm, but the low ceiling creates a cramped vibe despite floor-to-ceiling windows and a balcony. The king bed is island-style, facing the window—a layout also seen at Haikou InterContinental and Sanya Fairmont. The quirky upside? Lying in bed lets you glimpse a half-obstructed Ferris wheel through the buildings. Other standard amenities are decent, with well-maintained hardware. I particularly love the Le Labo Rose 31 toiletries custom-made for Fairmont. However, the lackluster welcome fruit and no turndown service pale compared to Swissôtel. The Fairmont Gold Lounge access costs an extra SGD 180—clearly not worth it when you could have Song Fa bak kut teh instead. Breakfast at the Italian restaurant on the first floor is atmospheric but involves queues and zero service—everything's DIY. The spread focuses on Western options: fresh juices, cheeses, cold cuts, Greek yogurt, bread, jams—so lavish it's almost visually filling. Return later for ice cream and a perfect afternoon. The fitness center hides on the cramped 6th floor, resembling an equipment level—low ceilings, no windows, and Arctic AC levels. Yet it's shockingly popular, with people working out as early as 5:30 AM. Ultimately, compared to Swissôtel's distinct character, this Fairmont feels slightly undefined, like it hasn't found its rhythm—but that's true for most of us ordinary folks. It's still worth including on your travel list as a benchmark to judge other hotels.
