The traditional charm of Sintra, just a stone’s throw from Lisbon

Welcome to the enchanting town of Sintra, nestled in the lush Sintra Mountains. Once the exclusive playground of Portuguese royalty and nobility, Sintra's majestic charm still captivates visitors today. With its laid-back atmosphere, breathtaking palaces, and stunning scenery, this picturesque town is a haven for those seeking a taste of Portugal's rich history and natural beauty. Let's explore the magic of Sintra together!" Our first port of call was a visit to the quaint historic centre of Sintra. Some of the gloriously quirky things that can be seen in the town include a carnival style shop devoted to canned Sardines! They’re dotted across Portugal, whilst they’re a little niche, it’s a cool shop to explore. There’s also shops selling shoes made out of cork and of course, Port wine is on offer in abundance. 1€ for a shot - can’t really go wrong with that! Having explored the historic centre, it’s time to visit one of the palaces that make this town so famous. With at least 5 to choose from, you’ve got to visit at least one. So which one did we go for? Palacio de Pena is the crown jewel of Sintra's palaces and castles. Perched majestically atop a hill in the Sintra Mountains, this 19th-century masterpiece is an architectural wonder that will leave you spellbound. With its vibrant facades, intricate stonework, and whimsical turrets, Pena Palace is a photographer's dream come true. And as you wander through its fantastical grounds, you'll feel like you've stepped into a real-life fairy tale - think Disney magic, minus the theme park vibes! It is also the most popular of the palaces in Sintra, and access is only available at 30 minute intervals. Once tickets are gone, they’re gone! So you’ll want to book in advance. Once inside the palace, you’re offered a glimpse into the lives of Portuguese royalty from centuries past - taking you back to the 16th century and working through to the early 20th century. Here, Extravagance is an understatement. Look out for the intricate details in the stonework and ceilings. It’s a marvel to walk around and explore the opulence on display. Once you’ve explored the interior of the palace, it’s back outside again for even more spectacular views. There’s just so many nooks and crannies to discover here that you’ll want to spend all day wandering around. #sintra #portugal #europe #holiday #vacation

Sintra is a Portuguese village located very close to Lisbon. There are several attractions to know in the city, I suggest spending more than a day in the city. Pictured is the Palácio da Pena, which on July 7, 2007 was elected as one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal. #historicallandmarks #portugal
