Archaeological Site of Mystras

The Mystras Archaeological Site is located 7 km west of Sparta in the Peloponnese region of Greece. It is a medieval city built on a hill about 621 meters high, at the foot of Mount Taietos. The site can be clearly divided into two parts: the upper part is the castle built by the Franks on the top of the hill, the imperial palace complex, the feudal royal residence, several monasteries and the Hagia Sophia, which are surrounded by a wall with two gates; the lower part is surrounded by another wall, and the center of these buildings is the Cathedral of St. Gemetius built in the 13th century. In addition, a monastery and the Pantanassa Cathedral built in the 14th century are also located in this lower part of the building. The Mystras Archaeological Site is one of the most perfect Byzantine buildings in Greece. In 1989, according to the criteria for cultural heritage selection (ii), (iii) and (iv), the Mystras Archaeological Site was approved by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee as a cultural heritage to be included in the World Heritage List.
