Skansen was founded in 1891 by linguist, teacher and folklorist Artur Hazelius. His goal is to educate people about Swedish history and culture by showcasing architecture, plants and animals from across Sweden. Skansen takes its name from a fortress built by Karl XIV Johan for his son Oscar I. Hatzelius bought the land and started building houses from all over Sweden. More than 140 buildings from all over Sweden show how life was like in different periods and regions.
