The temple was originally called Myori Punao Pagoda, but it is said that it came to be called Hanshan Temple when a monk named Hanshan came to live there during the Zhenguan period of the Tang Dynasty (627-649 AD). Zhang Ji's poem "Night Mooring at Fengqiao Bridge" is very famous.
