The National Taichung Theater was my go-to spot every weekend during my university days. It’s the kind of place where you instinctively slow down, look up, and take in the surroundings. More than just a performance venue, it feels like a piece of art you can step into. Its exterior resembles a cave, while the interior feels like an echo chamber. The space is devoid of right angles, with surprises hidden around every corner. Whether you’re here to watch a performance, grab a coffee, snap some photos, or simply enjoy the air conditioning, you’ll find the atmosphere comforting and enveloped in art. 🏛️ Architectural Highlight: The World’s Only Opera House Built with Curved Wall Construction Designed by Japanese architect Toyo Ito, the opera house is constructed entirely using curved wall techniques, breaking away from traditional straight lines, walls, and ceilings. You won’t find sharp corners here; instead, the building features cave-like flowing curves and circular openings. The entire structure seems to breathe, and sound travels naturally and smoothly within. Attending a concert or opera here feels like the sound is "flowing" along the building’s contours, which was the designer’s original inspiration. 📸 Free Public Spaces + Instagram-Worthy Architectural Lines Even if you don’t have tickets for a performance, you can explore the public areas on floors 1 to 3. The open spaces include a bookstore, café, exhibition areas, and plenty of spots where visitors come specifically to photograph the building’s flowing walls and play of light and shadow. Highly recommended: •🎵 Sky Theater Platform on the 6th Floor: Offers a view of Taichung’s Seventh Redevelopment Zone and a hidden spot to overlook the opera house’s rooftop structure (accessible by elevator). •📷 Ground Floor Lobby and Corridors: Soft natural light combined with curved concrete walls make this a favorite photography location. •🌇 Nighttime Exterior Lighting: Blue and purple lights reflecting on the glass curtain walls create a dreamy atmosphere, perfect for night photography or a romantic stroll. 🎫 Diverse Performances: From Classical to Contemporary, Family-Friendly to International Shows The opera house features three main theaters, with the largest accommodating over 2,000 people. Each year, it hosts a variety of performances, including concerts, stage plays, operas, modern dance, and experimental works. There are also family-friendly shows and smaller, artsy productions.
