2025 Garmisch-Partenkirchen Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in July)

#2024mapped Zugspitze is hands down the best part of my trip in Germany. Being the tallest mountain of Germany, it is yet not that famous internationally (at least not outside Europe) as a place with snowy mountainous landscape. But it should have been. The view up there is breathtaking, with a fantastically designed 360degree panoramic platform. Since the mountain is shared by Germany and Austria, they share the platform but have their own restaurants/facilities. The German side is more sleek/modern, while the Austrian side has incredible views at the restaurant (if you need a meal up there, I’d strongly recommend to do it at the Austrian side). The cable car pass costs the same whether you ski or not, which is odd but lovely. Had I had more time, I’d certainly choose to come up with a complete set of gear. But that also means you might wanna plan up more time for a trip to Zugspitze. And there’s a combo deal with a train ticket from Munich that has departure early in the morning, which is extremely worth considering, if one is to arrive by train. The reason why I didn’t have enough time is: the lake at the bottom, Eibsee, is a gorgeous lake with mesmerizing. I’d even argue it’s the best lake in Germany and in no way inferior to any Switzerland lakes. Do reserve two hours to go a full round, preferably in the morning. It’s absolutely worth it.

As the name suggests, it is the "summit". It is the highest mountain in Germany, with an altitude of 2962m. It is located on the border between Bavaria in Germany and Tyrol in Austria, and it is very interesting to see how the view changes drastically depending on whether you look at it from the German side or the Austrian side. Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the base town for Zugspitze, is very accessible, and it takes about an hour and a half from Munich Central Station without changing trains. From there, you can take the mountain railway and the ropeway and climb to the summit without walking! The view on the way up is also spectacular, so don't miss it! ! There is also an observation deck and restaurant at the summit station, so it is recommended to enjoy the spectacular view while enjoying Bavarian cuisine and beer. #celebratewithtrip Going to Garmisch-Partenkirchen on an Autumn season has its own charm. The place was romantic surrounded with beautiful plants and trees with its colourful leaves ❤️ Garmisch-Partenkirchen is easy to reach by car or by train from Munich. The city center is not far from the train station. There are also public buses that could bring you to the other parts of the city. The bus tickets are affordable and bus rides are also convenient because I don’t need to find a a parking space which is a kind of tricky in the city center unless you want to pay, then there are plenty of them around 😊 While on a hike, I took all these photos of the colourful leaves that surrounds me. We wanted to be here on the top a day before but we did not make because the day‘s limit was already reached, so they no longer sold any tickets. The online booking was not possible and what we did was we bought our tickets at the counter for the next day. Zugspitze can be reached by a special train that starts at Garmisch-Partenkirchen Zugspitze station. The ticket costed 63€ per person and it was really worth it! On the summit, you can find restaurants and cafes. There is also a museum that showed the history of Zugspitze, its train, the station, the people who built the station and those who were behind the scenes. While on the summit, we clearly saw the beautiful Eibsee below us and it was stunning 🤩 Zugspitze is a very popular destination of germans and other nationals. The view on the top is breathtaking from in each season. Garmisch-Partenkirchen (in short, GaPa) is a ski town in Bavaria, Germany. The Alps attract skiiers to the town in the winter; in the summer, the mountain make great hiking grounds. The mountain are so tall that they can be seen even from the city. Alluring views of snow-capped mountains surround the city. On every street and every road, there is bound to be a part of the snowy mountains peeking behind the buildings. I'd highly recommend a visit to GaPa! I highly recommend Wildkaffee for a coffee run. This place is really popular, there was a long queue of more than 10 people when I was there at 9am. Location: Bahnhofstraße 40+42, 82467 Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany The smell of freshly roasted beans hit me the moment I opened the door and I knew that I was in the right place. Freshly baked bread, great coffee, welcoming staff, warm atmosphere - everything that I need to kickstart my morning. The coffee was so good that I bought some beans back home for my own brew. Cable cars run from Eibsee to the top of Zugspitze for panoramic views. There is a restaurant at the top with great food and stunning views. We were planning to head there for lunch to soak in all the views but unfortunately cable car tickets were sold out for the day (and the whole week). What a bummer. We were told to pre-book our tickets online ahead as they sell out fast, especially in winter. Ended up playing snow at the foot of the mountain near the car park. It is skiing on the mountain and it is very convenient to rent ski equipment. Come here to experience the fun of skiing. The spring and summer scenery here is also very good. There are mountains and lakes with grass and the photos are beautiful.

#europetravel My most memorable nature trip in Germany has to be Zugspitze. It’s the highest mountain in Germany. But it’s shared by both Germany and Austria. So on top of the mountain, we are able to see the cable car station on both sides. Do find your way to check out the Austrian side restaurant, it is more vibey (the german side is more modern trendy). The lake down there, Eibsee is a must-go too. It’s not huge. One full round is doable in an hour plus. But surely, you’d wanna take a lot of photo, so you should expect maybe 2hours. I personally think one should leave 2days for Zugspitze. One for the view, and the other for skiing experience. If you’re a solo traveler, there is a very worthy combo tix that combines cable car tix with train tix from Munich.
