[2025 Sendai Attraction] Travel Guide for Aoba Shrine (Updated Jul)

Aoba Shrine was founded in 1874 (Meiji 7) by former retainers of the Date clan. The enshrined deity is Takefuruhiko-no-Mikoto (Date Masamune). The main shrine also enshrines his wife, Megohime, and there is a memorial shrine for the retainers who served Masamune within the precincts. Six buildings, including the main hall and worship hall, are designated as tangible cultural properties by the nation. The shrine is also well-known for the 'Sendai Aoba Festival' held every May, featuring a mikoshi (portable shrine) procession. A very old shrine but well maintained. Visited this place during weekdays so it was nice and quiet. It's about a 10 minute walk from Kita Sendai Station. It is located in the Kitayama area of Sendai. The large white stone torii gate was rebuilt in 2014, after the previous one collapsed in the Great East Japan Earthquake. After passing through the torii gate, there is a long staircase. Visit the shrine with gratitude. I received a simple handwritten stamp.
