Sendai Sightseeing: Aoba Shrine
Aoba Shrine was founded in 1874 (Meiji 7) by former retainers of the Date clan. The enshrined deity is Takefuruhiko-no-Mikoto (Date Masamune). The main shrine also enshrines his wife, Megohime, and there is a memorial shrine for the retainers who served Masamune within the precincts. Six buildings, including the main hall and worship hall, are designated as tangible cultural properties by the nation. The shrine is also well-known for the 'Sendai Aoba Festival' held every May, featuring a mikoshi (portable shrine) procession.
