#localfinds I recently visited Bratislava Castle, and it was one of the highlights of my trip to Slovakia! Located on a hill overlooking the Danube River, the castle offers spectacular views of the city and even neighboring Austria. The entrance fee was €10, and it’s well worth it. The interior has been beautifully restored, and I loved exploring the historical exhibits that take you through Slovakia’s rich past. The castle’s architecture is stunning, with its four towers standing proudly against the skyline. While the inside of the castle was interesting, the real charm was walking around the grounds. The gardens are immaculate, and the panoramic view of Bratislava’s Old Town is a must-see, especially at sunset. Nearby, you can easily walk down to St. Martin’s Cathedral or take a stroll by the river. I spent about 2-3 hours here, but you could easily spend more time enjoying the view and exploring the nearby attractions. The Brastislava Castle overlooks 18th Century Old Town and The Danube River by the border Austria & Hungary. An inexpensive place to visit compared to the cities of western Europe, Bratislava offers enough attractions and activities for just a short visit. Most of the main attractions are within walking distance of one another, it's very easy to navigate between them during a day in Bratislava. I spent my day in Bratislava immersing myself in the Slovakian culture, and of course trying out some of its cuisine. It's a city largely influenced by different cultures, and the area has a rich history dating back thousands of years. One of my favourite facts is that Bratislava is the only capital in the world that borders two different countries (Austria and Hungary), meaning it's perfectly located for day trips, either to or from it. Bratislava totally exceeded my expectations. I joined a day tour from Vienna. I honestly didn’t know much about the city going in just that it’s the capital of Slovakia and kind of tucked between Vienna and Budapest. But wow, it really holds its own. The old town is super charming with cobbled streets, pastel buildings, and hidden courtyards. I loved how compact the city is; you can explore most of it on foot without ever needing public transport. And it’s not swarming with tourists, which makes it feel authentic and relaxed. The view from Bratislava Castle is worth the climb. You can see the Danube River stretching out and even spot Austria on a clear day. One thing that stood out to me was how friendly the locals were. Most people I met spoke at least some English and were happy to recommend places to eat or visit. Food-wise, there are a lot of cozy cafés and surprisingly good international options, plus traditional Slovak food if you’re feeling adventurous. Prices are really decent too, cheaper than Western Europe by a long shot. I think it’s a great place to slow down and enjoy a quieter slice of European history. I went to Bratislava Castle in Bratislava, Slovakia. Bratislava doesn't have many tourist attractions, but this is a tourist landmark. It's about a 20-minute walk from the city center. The castle is on a hill and you have to climb a slope to get there. The castle itself is quite large and impressive. It is on a slightly elevated area, so I went there on a hot summer day and was sweaty and had a hard time getting there, but once I reached the top, the view was amazing😍 I could see the whole city of Bratislava! 📌How to travel from Hungary to Bratislava Castle In Europe, the easiest way to travel is definitely by train. We started our journey from Szombathley to Bratislava. - 05.14 Started the trip by train number 39829 from Szombathley - Hegyeshalom. It took a little over two hours to arrive. - 07.33 Left Hegyeshalom Station by train number 1306 to Bratislava-Petrzalka at around 08.07. After standing around the station for a while, we had to quickly find a ticket booth to continue our journey. Our goal was Bratislava Castle. - The train station here seems new, but in fact it is quite old. It is very difficult to find a bus ticket booth. I recommend walking outside first. And as someone who does not carry coins or cash like us, we had to look for a booth that could only pay with cards. The plane landed at Vienna Airport on time at 07:15. There will be a 15 hour transfer time here. I quickly checked in my luggage for the next flight and saved myself a lot of trouble. Walk out of the airport with ease. Where to go? Returning to Vienna? I improvised, followed my inspiration, and jumped on the airport FlixBus. 45 minutes later, I arrived in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. It is located on the Danube River, close to the borders of Austria and Hungary. Stand on the hill of Bratislava Castle and overlook the meandering Danube River and the entire city. From the Gothic St. Martin's Cathedral to the Baroque Old Town Hall to the modern UFO Tower, each building tells a different story. The rising sun dyed the sky golden, the Danube River sparkled under the sunlight, and the boats on the river floated slowly. I also quietly enjoyed this quiet moment in the busy morning. Bratislava has a complex and eventful history. It was the capital of Hungary from 1526 to 1784, and later became part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire as it formed. After the end of World War I in 1918, when the Austro-Hungarian Empire collapsed, the Czech and Slovak nations, which have close historical ties, chose to unite and jointly established the Czechoslovak Republic. Bratislava became its second city. Czechoslovakia disintegrated on January 1, 1993, and Slovakia became a sovereign and independent country with Bratislava as its capital. Walking on the cobblestone roads of the old city, you can feel the medieval style with its narrow streets, ancient buildings, and lively markets; while around the corner you may encounter modern art or fashionable cafes. This feeling of intertwining time and space is fascinating. Compared with many European big cities, Bratislava is quieter and more comfortable. There are no crowds and hustle and bustle here, allowing people to slow down and enjoy a leisurely travel time. Lunch is classic Slovak grilled chicken and strong coffee. Continue walking around this charming old town in the afternoon. Michael's Gate - is the only preserved medieval city gate and a symbolic entrance into the old city. Old Town Hall - Located in the main square, it is one of the oldest buildings. The building was built in the 13th century and was used as a prison and a mint. Now a museum, Main Square - This is the heart of the old town, surrounded by various historical buildings and colorful houses. St. Martin's Cathedral - This 15th-century Gothic cathedral is the largest church and was the coronation church for the Hungarian kings and queens. Blue Church: Also known as St. Elizabeth's Church, this building is known for its candy-colored walls and roof and is one of the most beautiful Secession buildings. Every corner of the old city has a story, and every building carries history. At dusk, I returned to Vienna with a lot of memories.
