I have been to many red wineries in France or Italy, so I changed my destination to Castello di Amorosa Winery in Santa Rosa, a suburb of San Francisco, USA. It is a replica of an authentic 14th-century Tuscan castle winery built by the fourth-generation winemaker Dario Sattui. Going back to the Italian family tradition, the stones and building materials here were all shipped from Europe and were hand-carved and painted to replicate the sense of a European manor, to commemorate the family's Italian tradition and love of medieval architecture. Their family started growing grapes and building a winery in Italy in the 1840s. Their ancestors came to San Francisco during the global gold rush in 1848 and settled here to open a winery. However, the third generation closed the winery during the Prohibition in San Francisco in 1920, reopened it for winemaking in the 1940s and 1950s, and became popular again in the 1970s. The winery castle has guided tours that allow you to visit the vineyards, the castle chapel, the winery, taste wine, and enjoy lunch at the winery castle, starting at about US$70.

This had been on my bucket list for years and so glad to have finally gotten the opportunity to cross it off in the scenic Napa Valley. The hot air balloon ride is ideal for early morning risers who wish to experience a bird’s eye perspective of the scenic vineyards of Napa while listening to the pilot share about ballooning. The weather was great as well, but do remember to check out the weather reports beforehand if you are considering to go on the trip. Growing up in the 90’s, Napa Valley seemed like a place where all the cool kids lived. Films like The Parent Trap showed it as a whimsical place where the sun shines all year round and life is constantly sweet. Fast forward to today, what is like to visit this world famous wine region? It really is like a dream, but maybe for different reasons compared to when I was a kid! Rolling hills, beautiful vistas and winery after winery abound. Life is relaxed, though maybe not slow paced here. It offers a completely different experience to other places in California such as the big city life of San Francisco and Los Angeles where things really are on edge. We took a drive and just seen what winery’s took our fancy - there’s plenty to choose from! You’re certainly not going to be short of choice. Some are a lot cheaper than others when it comes to taking a tour and trying the tasters on offer. We went for a tour of the Sutter Home vineyard and certainly weren’t disappointed. I loved trying different wine samples here and the tour was amazing. It’s a must visit in Napa. I do recommend making a reservation prior to visiting. The tour guides were also funny, friendly and attentive. Definitely worth the trip.
