The Tang capital Chang'an was divided into separate wards and markets, with numerous residences and shops. The Eastern Market, also known as the 'Great Market', was adjacent to the Xingqing Palace. It was an area where many officials and nobles lived, and the prices were relatively high. The Western Market was known as the 'Gold Market' due to its proximity to the starting point of the Silk Road, the Kaiyuan Gate, and was considered a world-class commercial center. Not only were gold and silver wares, gems, glass, spices, and goods such as silk, porcelain, and tea traded and transshipped here, but Eastern and Western cultures also exchanged and integrated. As an international commercial capital, Chang'an was particularly known for its 'Hu merchants' from Central Asia and Persia (modern Iran), and the Abbasid Caliphate (modern Arabia), many of whom lived in the wards near the Western Market. Exotic taverns and inns were mostly distributed around the Western Market of Chang'an and the Qujiang area to the east of the city. Tributary trade was a form of diplomacy in ancient Central Plains dynasties, involving official tributes and reciprocal gifts with foreign countries. Tributes included rare birds and beasts, jewels and spices, dwarfs, 'exotic dances' such as the Hu Xuan dance, and famous horses. Often, Hu merchants would join the envoys or act as messengers themselves, seizing significant business opportunities. According to Tang dynasty etiquette, when royal relatives and high-ranking officials were buried, epitaphs were placed inside the tomb passage, and mourning registers were typically reserved for the emperor, crown prince, and empress dowager. The mourning register of Crown Prince Huizhuang was engraved in intaglio, in running script, and featured gold filling. The eighty-one ministerial statues at Qianling Mausoleum are located on both sides of the Zhuque Gate outside the joint tomb of Emperor Li Zhi and Empress Wu Zetian, with thirty-two on the west side and twenty-nine on the east. These statues represent the vassal kings, envoys, and high-ranking generals who contributed to the Tang dynasty's seven-year war in the Western Regions. This is a microcosm of the vassal states submitting to the Tang dynasty and guarding the palace, and a true portrayal of the scene described in Wang Wei's poem: 'The Nine Heavens Portal opens to the palace, and nations in full regalia pay homage with their crowns.'

The patterns were delicate and intricate, with bright and light colors, and pink hues were a main characteristic of the clothing color palette of this period. Men typically wore coats, waistcoats, and breeches. The waistcoat was the most decorative part, with lace still worn around the neck, white silk stockings below the knee, and high-heeled shoes adorned with large buckles. Coats were more fitted to the body, and feminization in men's fashion became increasingly prominent. In 18th-century China, it was the golden age of traditional silk handcrafting. Silk patterns were dominated by auspicious meanings, 'every design has a meaning, and every meaning is auspicious.' Influenced by foreign art, silk patterns of this time also featured a blend of Western and Eastern elements, such as Rococo style and Persian motifs. Textiles with Chinese-style patterns became popular throughout Europe in the 18th century. The silk fabrics designed in Lyon represented the highest standard of 'Chinoiserie' design in European silk textiles.
