The bridge is named after the Japanese mythological creature "Kappa". The river under the bridge is the Azusa River. There is a gravel trail on each side, which is a good choice for many tourists and Japanese people to hike. The river trail has towering trees, beautiful scenery, and fresh air, so you won't feel tired walking on it. In addition, you can hear the sound of bells everywhere. It is said that there are bears in the mountains and forests. For safety, when bears hear the sound of human bells, they will avoid them, just like what we call alerting the snake. No wonder there are bells of various shapes for sale in the art shops near Kappa Bridge. It takes about three or four hours to walk to the trailhead. The tour group did not have so much time to allow tourists to hike here, so we spent about an hour enjoying the scenery along the Azusa River.

From Osaka / Kyoto → Kamikochi • By train: • Take the Shinkansen to Nagoya → Transfer to the train to Matsumoto • Then travel the same way as from Tokyo • By direct bus: • There are direct buses from Osaka and Kyoto to Kamikochi (~6-7 hrs) 3. All of its major peaks, except for Mae-Hotaka, are located on the border of Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, and Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture. The peaks of Okuhotaka, Karasawa, Kitahotaka, Maehotaka, and Nishihotaka are called the Hotaka Mountains. The highest peak in this mountain range, and also the highest peak in both Nagano and Gifu prefectures, is Okuhotakadake, known as the “main peak of the Northern Alps.” Okuhotakadake is 3,190 meters above sea level and is the third highest peak in Japan after Mount Fuji and Mount Kitayama. In 1906, Gunji Abe completed the first ascent of Okuhotakadake. To view the Hotaka Mountains, you can take the cable car up to Nishi-Hotakadake, which is 3,090 meters above sea level.
