2025 Gero Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in June)

Nagoya - Gero Onsen - Takayama - Shirakawa-go - Tateyama Kurobe Day 1: It takes about 40 minutes to travel from Nagoya Airport to the city center, costing around ¥1000. Most restaurants close at 10 PM, while izakayas usually stay open until around midnight. On weekdays, closing times might be even later. Day 2: Purchased the Hida 3-Day Pass from JR, which includes round-trip bus tickets to Shirakawa-go (~¥12000). Visited Gero Onsen. The town was larger than expected, with shops, shrines, and everything you need. Explored Gero Gassho Village, which is relatively small with limited photo spots, but the mountain slide was very fun. Note that most restaurants are closed on Mondays, so plan accordingly. Day 3: Visited Takayama and Shirakawa-go. The bus pass needs to be exchanged in person, and staff will explain the bus schedules in detail. There were quite a lot of visitors, but about 10-20% of the shops were closed. Around 3-4 hours is sufficient to explore. Returned to Takayama and enjoyed Hida beef sukiyaki. Day 4: Spent the day exploring Takayama City, which has a nostalgic atmosphere. Strolled through the old streets and then returned to Nagoya. Day 5: Had Hida beef barbecue, visited Nagoya Castle, Osu Kannon, and Osu Shopping Street. Day 6: Joined a 2-day, 1-night local tour to Kamikochi and Tateyama Kurobe. Kamikochi is stunning with its clear mountains, majestic snowy peaks, and picturesque scenery that is truly refreshing. Day 7: Explored Tateyama Kurobe using six different modes of transportation, which took about 8 hours including sightseeing. Unfortunately, the weather was bad with strong winds and heavy rain, and the temperature dropped sharply, making it hard to enjoy photo-taking or the experience. Day 8: Visited Chubu Electric Power Museum, explored the underground shopping streets, and then headed back home.

It was a winter trip to Gifu, Japan with my partner. Gifu in winter is a magical escape filled with stunning scenery and cultural treasures 😍 We started our journey in Takayama, a charming city surrounded by the Japanese Alps. The preserved Sanmachi Suji district was a highlight, with its traditional wooden 🪵 buildings, sake breweries, and shops. Walking through the snow-covered streets felt like stepping back in time. The ambiance was perfect for photography, especially with the warm glow of lanterns at dusk. The sunrise and sunset shots from here were spectacular, and the peaceful vibe made it one of the most memorable stops of our trip. At GeroGero Butter Stand, they sell butter sandwiches, food, drinks, and souvenirs made with locally sourced Gero milk. Located in the Gero Onsen town, the cute yellow exterior stands out! I immediately tried the butter soy sauce rice ball that I had been curious about, and the rich butter matched perfectly with the grilled rice ball. It was so delicious that I went back the next day to have it again. You can also enjoy your food while soaking in the milk-colored foot bath with cute calves! Yunoshimakan Hotel is located in Gero City, Gifu Prefecture. It is an old 5-star hotel. This hotel was also once a hotel where the Japanese royal family stayed. The hotel is located on a hill, but don't worry about transportation because there is a shuttle service from JR Station every now and then. The staff will send an email to inform you of the available times before your trip. On the way back, they will drop you off at the train station as usual. The hotel is called Kusakabe Almeria in Gero Onsen 🏨 You move around the hotel by cable car. (No elevators.) Very rare!! There are many rooms, and women can choose the color of their yukata for the hotel for free. I stayed at Suimeikan, one of the most popular ryokans in Gero Onsen!!! ⁡ 📍1268 Koda, Gero City, Gifu Prefecture 🚃Nagoya Station to Gero Station, Hida Express, about 1 hour 40 minutes or 🚗Nagoya Station to Suimeikan, about 2 hours ⁡ ⚫︎1 night for 2 people with 2 meals, from about 16,000 yen per person (according to Jalan) ⁡ ✔️Recommended points ⚫︎There are 3 large public baths, so you can try them all♨️ Some are open 24 hours. ⚫︎The hotel is spacious and beautiful✨ The room smelled of wood!!! ⚫︎The view from the room was beautiful (you can see the Hida River and the mountains) ⚫︎The staff guided us to our room and made us tea🍵 ⚫︎The food was delicious🍱 Not only the dinner, but the breakfast buffet also had a wide variety of food and was delicious and very satisfying🥢 ⚫︎The bath in the room also had hot spring water♨️ ⚫︎You can also enjoy the hot spring pool and gym🏊‍♀️ ⁡ ✔️Points to note ⚫︎ There are three large baths scattered throughout the large building, so you may have to walk quite a bit from your room to the baths 👣 Personally, I enjoyed the walk so it didn't bother me!!! ⁡ The hot springs and food were so good that I definitely recommend you go!!! ⁡ I spent 2 nights and 3 days in total in Gifu and Nagoya, but I had always wanted to come to Gero Onsen, so I didn't want to sleep so I stayed up late and got up early 😇 The next day I was very sleepy while driving... #onsen #onsentrip #gifu #geroonsen #gifutrip #onsen

I especially liked the chewy tofu in the dashi jelly 👀 ⁡ ⚫︎Sashimi 🐟 Squid and tuna were served. There was quite a lot of it, so as a sashimi lover, I was grateful!!! ⁡ ⚫︎Shrimp stew with clams and green laver 🍲 The shrimp stew was fluffy and delicious, and I drank up all the dashi 🥺 ⁡ ⚫︎Local trout baked with potatoes wrapped in cellophane 🥔 Both the trout and potatoes were delicious. I went to Hotel Kusakabe Almeria in Gero Onsen, Gifu Prefecture, one of the three most famous hot springs in Japan! The selling points of this hotel are the spacious rooms, the natural Gero hot spring with a spectacular open-air bath, and the luxurious buffet. They provide free transportation from Gero Station at any time. This time, I stayed in the cheapest room, which cost about 12,000 yen including two meals. There are several large public baths, and the open-air bath with a panoramic view of the town of Gero was especially amazing. The rooms are also quite spacious. Almost too spacious for one person. The village has been recreated with Gassho-style houses relocated from Shirakawa-go and other places, and it has a very charming atmosphere.
